Echoing Steppe and Friend of Steppe, cooperating with Friend of Nature(FoN), established the Joint Work Committee for Steppe Protection.

The Committee has translated law books into Mongolian and published 30,000 volumes.

Volunteers went to Uzimchin Steppe and made surveys on remaining grassland.

The committee, cooperating with Beijing Brooks Education Centre (BBEC), gave a lecture on “the Ownership of Collective Land?at Peking University Resource Building, on Jun. 5th-United Nations World Environment Day.

The committee organized two seminars about law popularization and economy cooperation at East Uzimchin County, during Jun. 22th-26th, and over 60 herders from six pasturing counties and ten more experts attended.

The committee organized a performing team led by Urnaa went to 4 pasturing counties of HulunBeir Meng and gave traveling shows and law popularization to local herders as well.

The committee exposed on the internet what’s happening on the Gorhan River zigzagging in the draught Inner Mongolia Steppe and the plan that the Gorhan river would be truncated and utilized to built a reservoir used for a near coal-fire power plant planed, which raising greatly attention among the masses and news media.

The committee held a one-week computer training course in Mongolian to 16 herders.

1.     The committee has been gaining great supports of computer equipments and funds from the society:

n         50,000 RMB from Mr. Jiang Rong

n         28,000 RMB from Asia Foundation

n         5,000 RMB from Mr. Zhang Wei

n         4,000 RMB from SEE

n         2,000 RMB from Lv Yan

n 1,500 RMB from Echoing Steppe

n         1,000 RMB from one internet friend

n         500 RMB from Zhao Yi

n         1,000 RMB from Liu Xiaohong

1.       By the end of Dec. 16th, the Jonit Work Committee had gained fund support:

            83,500 RMB totally,

and expended:

            81,500 RMB totally.

2.       The fund support had been used for following items mainly:

n         held seminars among herders and experts

n         published law popularization books in Mongolian

n         held public environment education

n         made surveys on the steppe environment

3.    Some fees were borne by the volunteers themselves because of the lack of the fund, for e.g., holding meetings, transporting, bed fees, dinner fees.
