Who we are

The Echoing Steppe website was established in 2000, is a bilingual website to help Ujumchin herdsmen protect their homes in accordance with the law.

We tell Steppe stories and news to help journalists and citizens understand the ecological status of grassland.

We exhibit Chen Jiqun's paintings set in the grassland of East Ujumchin Banner from 1967 to the present.

At the same time, the relevant investigation report of the existing grasslands in Inner Mongolia was published.

Chen Jiqun: The difference between nomadic culture and farming culture in terms of natural ecological protection

        ¡ª¡ªyangshipin.cn  August 24, 2020

¡¡

The Nomadic culture is ecological civilization.

In the Steppe grasslands of Inner Mongolia, only perennial grasses can survive in many places. Because the annual precipitation is below 300mm, the climate is too cold and the plants only have a three-month growth period.
The cold and dry grasslands in northern China are where nomads live. The survival of herders depends on their own traditional nomadic culture: They do not eat the grass and plants that livestock and wildlife depend on, but do their best to protect the wildlife and plants that live with them. They protect The grassland vegetation cannot be destroyed.
Both their customary law and statutory law are talking about this issue. This is the most important thing.
If the grassland vegetation is destroyed, herders will not survive, and animals will not survive.
They are completely different from farming culture.
Agricultural culture is to eat plants and their seeds, so the forest is cultivated into farmland.
For example, there is another name in the province Henan called "Yu", which means it was once the territory of elephants. Are there still elephants? No more, why?
That's because people cut down forests to plant crops, and wild animals such as elephants have disappeared.
Farming must eliminate other plants, otherwise it will affect the yield of crops. This is agricultural culture.
Due to the abundant rainfall and warm climate there, new crops can be planted and grown in cycles every year.

Therefore, the nomadic culture in the cold and arid pastoral areas of northern China is an ecological civilization to protect native plants.

Chen Jiqun is an artist and have 'Echoing Steppe website'.

'Echoing Steppe' is a NGO( www.cyngo.net ), mainly the protection of existing natural grassland in Inner Mongolia(China) and traditional nomadic culture.

We have Internet websites. We plan and implement ecological and social study, training and education herdsmen to protect their land, interests and traditional culture.

And then use Internet sites published information for the community and more people's understanding and support.

We wish that through the laws popularization in Mongolian language and establishment of internet information stations, herders can know the 慶ollective land ownership? endowed by laws, know the approachs to apply for the certificates, so they can protect their own homesteads, the nomadic culture and the right to choose their own life style through the laws, and then the contrived invasions and occupations of the grasslands are expected to be stayed, poverty and ecosystem worsen as a result of grassland degradation can be avoided.

During 2001-2012£¬
we published Mongolian language laws books for 26 volumes, 80,000 books totally, and we organized volunteers and have already dispersed over 60,000.

Books among herders of Uzemchin and Hulunbeir grasslands (Wuzhumuqin and
Hulunbeier are the only remaining natural grassland[Steppe] and pastoral areasin in north of China).
